Catherine was the daughter of Margaret and Conrad Schaefer. Her family emigrated to the United States from the Westphalia (Alsace-Lorraine) area of Germany. She married David Reiss ca 1857 in Louisville, KY. They lived in the Chicago and Kankakee IL areas, and eventually moved to Louisville. Catherine was a member of the Roman Catholic faith. She loved to dance; a family member recalled seeing a picture of her in a costume she made from corn shucks.
Their children were: Margaret (married John Braun), John David (married Margaret Jane Smith), Mary Frances (married 1-Martin Beckley, 2-Nate Pay), Ella, who died at age 7, Dorothy Louise (married William Rodgers and Edward Francis (married Viola Kramer). Her husband David, and several children are interred in St. Michael's Cemetery, Louisville KY.
