He was the oldest of eight children born to James Lee and Ruth Schooler Hammons. He had a knack with horses and was an excellent rider. He was also a wonderful dancer.
He married Hazel Priscilla Morrison in 1935 and they had a son, Royal. They divorced soon after marriage and in 1936, he married Alice Jane Ernst in Yuba City, CA. They met while he was breaking horses in the riverbottoms between Yuba City and Marysville, CA. They had one daughter, Barbara Ruth Hammons.
He committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning. It broke his parents and siblings hearts and they never got over it. As for me, his daughter, I wish I could have known him.

A very big thank you, sent with love to Laura Grissom Tips, for sponsoring my father's site. You are a special angel Laura.
