Union Civil War veteran. Commanding officer, Company H, 17th U.S. Colored Infantry.
Lewis was one of three Bleakney brothers that fought in the Civil War. All Union soldiers. Lewis was born in Pennsylvania on January 20, 1838. He migrated with his family to Illinois. He enlisted in the 19th Illinois Infantry on 06/10/1861 as a Private in Chicago. He was
appointed to the 17th U.S. Colored Infantry as a 2nd Lt. in December 1863. He was promoted to Captain while with the 17th in July 1865. He mustered out 04/25/1866. He, as well as three of his brothers, migrated to Oregon (Marion County) approximately 1870.
