Birth: Nov. 20, 1822
Ashtabula County
Ohio, USA
Death: Mar. 30, 1871
Shawnee County
Kansas, USA

Harriett was born in Ashtabula, OH, the first-born to Chester & Eliza (Castle; Goff) Potter. Her family migrated to Illinois in 1831, probably via Lake Erie to Chicago on board the ship Telegraph, owned by the Naper brothers. Chicago, at that time, consisted of three log cabins.

Harriett's father, Chester Potter, first rented a mill in Henderson County from former neighbors in Ashtabula, OH, and then established his own mill in Warren Co., IL, on the banks of the Henderson River. It was here that Harriett met and married William Chilson, and where all of their children were born.

NOTE: Many thanks to Find A Grave! This Chilson family is reunited here. The only missing child is Edwin, twin to Edward, who died within a few weeks of his birth. He is almost certainly buried in Potter Cemetery, Warren Co., IL. There are a number of broken, illegible stones there, and Edwin's is probably among them.
