5th President of Portugal. He served from December 16, 1918 to October 5, 1919. He also served as 67th Prime Minister of Portugal from December 15, 1918 to December 23, 1918. Prior to becoming president, he held the posts of Portugal's Navy Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister. He was also a career naval officer having attended the Portuguese-British College and the Royal Naval School. In 1892 he was appointed governor of Mozambique. In 1908 he was a deputy in parliament. After the murder of the incumbent president, he was elected to the office. He is best remembered for stopping two attempts to carry out revolutions. Although he was considered a monarchist, as President of the Republic, he fought against these movements that went against his own ideals. He submitted his resignation to congress on June 3, 1919 but it was rejected. He completed his term and was appointed full admiral. He retired in 1932.
