Artist and Art Critic. Tillim was an artist best known for his revival of history painting in the 1970's and as an art critic for "Arts Digest" (now "Arts Magazine"). He served in WW II as a combat engineer, and after being wounded, his assignment was his company's historian. He graduated from Syracuse University with a B.F.A. in 1950. He went to California and published a volume of poetry, "Those Days and Then the Sea" (1952), illustrated with his woodcuts. In 1953 he began writing exhibition reviews for "Arts Digest" in New York. In 1959 he was a full-time writer for the now "Arts Magazine". Though the 1950s, he was an abstract artist. He then began painting still lifes in the early 1960s, and figurative works, such as "The Champion" (1967). In the 1970s, he painted a series of highly detailed works depicting episodes of early American history. He was a contributing editor at "Artforum", covering such topics as Pop Art, Color Field Painting and Earth Art. He taught at Bennington College from 1966-1993, as well as Pratt Institute, The School of Visual Arts, and Parsons School of Design. His works are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (bio by: Ginny M)
