Born and raised in The Hague. Considered a formeost figure in Dutch Literature, he was a virtuoso at observing and uncovering the lives of his country's fin de siecle bourgeoisie. His literary efforts, in all some fifty books, range from novels and travel stories to poetry. His best known novels include "Eline Vere" (1888), "The Hidden Force" (1900), "The Books of the Small Souls" (1902), and "Of Old People and the Things That Pass" (1906).
