James J. Baker and his twin brother, Joseph, were born in 1856 in Marion County, Tennessee to Hiram B. Baker and Clarisy Jane Maddy. When the boys were still toddlers, the family relocated to Mack's Creek, Camden County, Missouri.
James' father and uncle, Hiram & Matthew Baker, were murdered in 1863 while home on furlough from Civil War duty, leaving Clarisy a widow with a number of young children. She left the remote farm where her husband was killed and moved her children to the Jackson township area of Camden County.
In 1878 Rev. William R. Brown performed a wedding ceremony for James J. Baker and Rebecca Arabell Milstead in Camden County. The couple remained in the area and had five children together.
James and Belle Baker were buried in Buffalo Prairie Cemetery in Montreal when they died.
