Professional Road Cyclist. He was a French cyclist best known for being the winner of the Tour de France in 1956. Born the son of a Polish immigrant, he was the oldest living Tour de France surviving champion. As a professional rider (1950-60), his many achievements included 3rd Tour de Dordogne (1951), 2nd Tour de l'Ouest (1952), 2nd Paris-Côte d'Azur (1953), 3rd Tour de l'Ouest (1954), 2nd Critérium du Dauphiné (1955), 1st in stage 13 Vuelta a España (1956), 1st in stage 8 Vuelta a España (1957), 2nd Boucles du Bas-Limousin (1958) and 3rd Tour de l'Aude (1960). After retiring from bicycling, he tended a sheep farm and worked in a metal factory in the 1970s. He died of natural causes at age 89.
