Prettyman Marvel Jr. was the fourth of nine children of Prettyman and Lavina Rogers Marvel. Prettyman Jr. was born May 08, 1801, Green Co, Georgia and died Jul 23, 1842, Waynesville, De Witt Co., IL. His parent came from Sussex County Delaware. In 1796 they moved to Green County Georgia. In December 1808 the Marvel family began moving North. With their seven children (John, Patience, Comfort, Prettyman Jr., James, Wiley and Nancy), they stopped in Livingston county, Kentucky during the summer of 1809. Here Lavina gave birth to their eighth child, Elizabeth. The group crossed the Ohio River that autumn and settled near "Old Fort Branch" in Gibson County, Indiana. Prettyman Jr. married Rebecca Barr May 15, 1823 in Owensville, Gibson Co., IN. She was the daughter of John Barr and Nancy Hamilton. In 1826 Prettyman Jr moved to the area that later became Waynesville township, Illinois. With the arrival of their seventh child, Prettyman III, in 1832, the family moved from their log cabin home to a frame house. It was here that their last 4 of their 11 children were born. By this time Illinois was becoming more thickly populated and Prettyman Marvel, Jr. was a prosperous farmer. He drove hogs to the Chicago market when that city was a mere village. It took about four weeks to make the trip, as there were no roads or bridges, Indian trails were followed and all streams had to be forded. Later he shipped stock by boat to New Orleans in order to obtain a better price. On one of these trips, Prettyman, Jr. contracted yellow fever. He was only 41 years old when he died at his home on 23 July 1842 and is buried in Union Cemetery in Waynesville, Illinois, on land that he had donated for a cemetery.
