He began his career on the stage, starting with Dublin's Abbey Players, and then moved onto Broadway, where he appeared in over 60 productions. A few of his more acclaimed roles were as George in "Hedda Gabler" (1924 and 1926), the grandfather in "On Borrowed Time" (1938), and as saloonkeeper Harry Hope in Eugene O'Neill's "The Iceman Cometh" (1946). He also had a busy career in Hollywood, appearing as a supporting actor in over 50 films, including "Condemned" (1929), "The Maltese Falcon" (1931), "I Am a Thief" (1932), "The Emperor Jones"(1933), "The Invisible Man" (1933), "Mutiny on the Bounty" (1935), "The General Died at Dawn"(1936), and "The Searching Wind"(1946). He was married to actress Mary Quinn.
