James McNaughton Lost!

Lost His Life In An Air Crash on Feb. 2
North of Rome

The end of service in both war areas—Atlantic and Pacific, came to an end Feb. 2, when Lt. James McNaughton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolmn McNaughton of Leavenworth, was killed in an airplane crash sixty miles north of Rome. This death also is deeply felt at Tonganoxie the old home of the McNaughton family. The grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. S. J. McNaughton lived here many years. An aunt Lucy McNaughton, resides here. Alicia Seifrit, teacher in the Southwest high school in Kansas City, Mo. and Mrs. Mabel Cain and family now reside in Lawrence.

Lt. McNaughton entered service at Scott Field, Ill. in October, 1942 and received his commission at Yale University March 4, 1943. He was sent to the South Pacific and helped establish a communications center and Munda, New Georgia. On a bombing mission he saw action when his craft was hit with heavy flak and fired on by Jap planes. The pilot made a forced landing in which two of the crew were killed. McNaughton suffered a would in the left leg, when became infected and he was returned to Letterman General Hospital, San Francisco. He received the Purple Heart and later spent some time in hospitals in Texas.

Recovering he was reassigned at Santa Monica, Calif. and went to Italy last November, by way of Bermuda. His base was at Tarquinia, about sixty miles north of Rome. It is thought he was on a plane which was removing wounded soldiers. He was with the 12th Air Force. he was married to Miss. Janet Nease of Leavenworth last May 27. He attended high school at Leavenworth and later K. U. and the New Mexico University. The family is well known over this part of the state. Lt. McNaughton's father has long been a prominent attorney in this county, and his grandfather at Tonganoxie before that. All the old friends of the family join in expressing regret on account of this misfortune—and the death of a fine young airman with an excellent record in World War II and who held the distinction of having served in both the Pacific and in the European theater.
