70, of Brooksville, FL died Friday, January 6, 2017 at his home. He was born in Bethesda, MD and came to the area 19 years ago from St. Petersburg, FL. He was the owner/operator of Richard Backus Custom Builders in Maryland and Washington, D.C. and a U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran. He was predeceased by his parents, W. Meril Backus and Marjorie Estes-Backus. He is survived by his wife, Deborah Backus of Brooksville; daughter, Jennifer Backus-Moriarty of GA; step-son, Robert Kirkpatrick of FL; beloved sisters, Carole Jeanne Backus-West of NC, Sharon Lynn Backus-Hanson of VA. He will be buried in the Vandevender plot in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Parkersburg, WV. Arrangements by Merritt Funeral Home, Brooksville, Florida.
