"About the close of the Revolutionary War, one of the greatest domestic misfortunes befell him. His wife, after bearing two sons and a daughter, became a confirmed maniac, and so remained till her death. In June 1787, he married a second wife - my mother - Rachel Horton of Gloucester, RI."

[Memoir of Rev. Stephen R. Smith, page 15]. Hope and Rachel moved away, and Elizabeth remained in Scituate under the care of her son Mial. When Hope Smith died, Mial proved through the courts that Elizabeth was the legal widow of Hope, and she received his war pension instead of the second wife.

First wife of Hope Smith, and she was his only legal wife.

Children: Obadiah Smith(husband of Catherine Parker), Sarah Smith Bowen Potter, and Mial Smith.
