Capt. Robert E. Hantelmann (ret.), 75, of 3074 Kane Court, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Resurrection Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. at Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a parish wake service at 5 p.m.
He was born on July 1, 1931, in Dubuque, son of Emil and Magdeline (Cox) Hantelmann. He married Beverly Jean "B.J." Weiner on June 7, 1952, at St. Mary's Catholic Church; she preceded him in death on Sept. 20, 1999.
He graduated from Loras Academy in 1950 and then from Northwestern Prep in Minneapolis. He attended Loras College.
Bob served in the Army with the 102nd Signal Battalion in Germany and France during the Korean War. He went on to be a Headquarters Commander with the Iowa National Guard and was a military aide to Iowa Attorney General Fred Tandy and Iowa Governors Harold Hughes and Leo Hoag. He retired after 25 years of active and reserve duty.
Bob was an avid Hawkeyes fan and loved traveling, reading and especially cooking. He had an extensive collection of cookbooks and friends and relatives looked forward to receiving his peanut brittle and fruit cakes during the holidays.
Bob was a past member of the Lions Club and Dubuque Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He was a current member of the American Legion Post 6 and Dubuque Elks Lodge 297, where he was Past Exaulted Ruler for two terms and Past District Deputy Grand Exaulted Ruler.
Surviving are three children, Kurt (Emma) Hantelmann, of Des Moines, Gail Hantelmann, of Cypress, Calif., and Gwen (George) Arroyo, of Brea, Calif.; five grandchildren, Anthony, Heather and Blake Arroyo and Brianna and Bode Hantelmann; a brother, Richard (Kathy) Hantelmann, of Dubuque; a sister, Donna Jean (Cliff) Van Zile, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and a sister-in-law, Darlene Hantelmann, of Dubuque.
He also was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Hantelmann.
