He worked in real estate and insurance while studying law. In 1917 he began work with North Shore Ice Company and became Vice President and General Manager in 1920. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the New York Senate in 1930. In 1934 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democrat and was reelected four times, serving from 1935 until his death. In his last three terms O'Leary was Chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the Executive Departments. He was the great-grandfather of Vito Fossella, who was elected to Congress as a Republican in 1997. (bio by: Bill McKern)
