Born in Fussville, Wis., where his father was a pioneer merchant, Mr. Schmitt came to Milwaukee at the age of 14 to study at a business college in preparation for a business career. But he soon became an apprentice to the late Prof. Adolph Loeffler, leading church artist here. He also studied here under the late Prof. Jan. Sukaczynski, famous mural artist. In later years he studied in Rome under Prof. Joseph Wilpert, an ecclesiastical artist and art authority.
Mr. Schmitt established his own studio here in 1890. Several days ago Mr. Schmitt received the blessings of Pope Pius XII through Archbishop Amleto Cicognani, apostolic delegate at Washington, D.C. Mr. Schmitt for 40 years was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus here and a member of the Holy Name society of Gesu church.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Hemmi; three sons, Ruppert P., and Edward J., both associated in the Schmitt studio, and Alphonse M.; three brothers, C. M., Hugo J. And Michael G.; three sisters, Miss Anna Schmitt, Mrs. Robert Pittelkow and Mrs. Lillian Wurm of Whitewater, Wis., and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Gesu church, with burial in Holy Cross cemetery. The body will be at the Schmitt home, 1717 W. Wisconsin av., Monday and until the time of the services."
