German Lieutenant-General of the infantry and Commander of the 16th army group in World War II. He was a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, awarded by Nazi Germany to recognize successful military leadership. He surrendered to the Red Army on May 8, 1945 in the Courland Pocket. Convicted as a war criminal in the Soviet Union, he was held until 1955.
