Actor. He was best known for playing the iconic villain Stefano DiMera on the NBC daytime soap "Days of Our Lives" from 1982 to 2016. He attended the University of Miami and the United States Military Academy. Originally interested in becoming a classical musician, a drama professor heard him and suggested that he give acting a try. He appeared in a number of theater productions in New York and London before making his way into television, and would continue to star in regional theater productions even while maintaining a busy soap opera schedule. He got his start in television in 1957 on the series "True Story". Besides "Days of Our Lives", his lengthy television credits included "The Doctors", "All in the Family", "Baretta", "Bronk", "Kojak", "Lou Grant", "The Rockford Files, The Incredible Hulk", "Santa Barbara", "General Hospital", and "The Bold and the Beautiful". He also had roles in various films including "Hot Spur" (1968), "Shaft's Big Score!" (1972), "Jaws 2" (1978), "Sharky's Machine" (1981), and "Heat" (1986). He also performed with the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
