Wife of Capt. William Coit, Sr., the Revolutionary patriot known as "The Great Red Dragon". Daughter of Capt. John Prentiss & Sarah Christophers.

Sarah was the mother of eight children, three sons and five daughters; the latter celebrated for their beauty. Samuel Waldo said that Esther (Mrs. Clapp) had the handsomest face he ever painted.

After the death of her husband, Sarah Prentice Coit moved to New York City to live with her daughter Esther, wife of Samuel Clapp. She died there in 1813 and was buried in Trinity churchyard beside her daughter, Mrs. Clapp.
