The National Guard unit he was a member of was activated into full time army service on February 24, 1941, prior to the war, from Wallingford, Vermont. He was noted, at that time, as being employed in woodworking and also as Single, without dependents.
B-24 #42-7769 took off, with a crew of 10, from Grottaglie, Italy on a bombing mission over Aviano, Italy.
Near their target they were hit by ground anti-aircraft flak which damaged the B-24 extensively. The pilot gave the order to bail-out and the B-24 crashed behind enemy lines. Two members of the crew were unable to bail-out and lost their lives. T/Sgt. Benny was able to evade capture.
Palmer was " Killed In Action " in this crash during the war.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
