Roman Catholic Archbishop. A native of Padova, Ermenegildo Pasetto entered the Franciscan Capuchin Minor Order at the convent of San Sebastiano of Bassano del Grappa, receiving the religious name of Fra Luca da Padova. Ordained priest on August 10, 1896, in January 1909 he was named coadjutor to the apostolic preacher, Friar Pacifico da Seggiano, who on May 20 of the previous year, had been elected Minister General of the Capuchin Order. Named eventually Apostolic Preacher himself on August 5, 1914, an office he held until 1921, on December 26, 1914 he was named furthermore consultant of the Sacred Congregation of Rites. Pope Benedict XV elected him bishop of the titular see of Gera, receiving his episcopal consecration on November 27, 1921 from Cardinal Gennaro Granito Pignatelli di Belmonte. Assigned by the Holy See with numerous delicate tasks as apostolic visitor to various dioceses, seminaries, curiae and religious colleges, as well as apostolic visitor and superior of various Orders and religious congregations in both in Italy and abroad, most notably he visited Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina along with Msgr. Felice Bevilacqua on March 14, 1933, sent over by Pope Pius XI to see the stigmatized friar whom up to that period was living without the ability to celebrate Mass publicly since June of 1931. Very much impressed with the future saint's humility, Pasetto proved instrumental in having Pius XI ordering the Holy See to reverse its ban on Padre Pio's public celebration of Mass, saying: "I have not been badly disposed toward Padre Pio, but I have been badly informed." Consultor of the Sacred Congregations of the Affairs of Religious and Propaganda Fide, Pasetto succeeded Msgr. Vincenzo Lapuma on the latter's elevation to the cardinalite as secretary of the Congregation of the Affairs of Religious on December 20, 1935. Named assistant at the Pontifical Throne on January 19, 1936 and promoted to the titular archbishopric see of Iconio on September 22, 1937, for fifteen years he collaborated with Cardinals Lapuma, Alexis Lépicier OSM., and Luigi Lavitrano, in their capacities as prefects of the said congregation. Growing older and weaker, submitting his resignation to Pope Pius XII, the latter had him named titular patriarch of Alexandria on November 11, 1950, appointing at the same time, Father Arcadio María Larraona CMF., as his successor. Moving to Venice, he spent his remaining months there, passing away at the age of eighty two. Following his death, the titular patriarchate of Alexandia remained vacant until being suppressed by Pope Paul VI along with those of Constantinople and Antiochia in January 1964.
