MATHEW WAS BORN IN A RURAL AREA OF MONROE COUNTY , VIRGINIA LONG BEFORE THE SPLIT OF VIRGINIA INTO WEST VIRGINIA. HE WAS THE SON OF JOHN HUMPHREYS III AND HIS WIFE SARAH "SALLY" BOON.MATHEW'S FAMILY EVENTUALLY CONSISTED OF 3 BROTHERS AND 4 SISTERS, BORN BETWEEN 1828 AND 1847. MATHEW WAS THE 3RD SON. MATHEW IS THE GRANDSON OF JOHN BOON , WHO IS A REVOLUTIONARY WAR HERO WHO CLAIMED TO BE THE NEPHEW OF THE FAMOUS FRONTERSMAN, DANIEL BOONE HOWEVER THIS CLAIMED RELATIONSHIP IS IN DOUBT.
MATHEW'S FIRST WIFE WAS MARY JANE HALL. THEY WERE MARRIED IN RONCEVERTE, GREENBRIER CO., VIRGINIA ON AUGUST 7, 1854.
MATHEW AND MARY HAD THREE CHILDREN, SARAH FRANCIS 1855, THOMAS ANDERSON 1856, AND INJE J.BORN AND DIED IN 1858. MARY DIED IN 1861.THE SURVIVING 3 CHILDREN MOVED AND SETTLED IN MISSOURI WHERE THEIR DESCENDANTS STILL LIVE TODAY.
MATHEW AND SECOND WIFE, MARTHA LOUELLEN CHENAULT HAD EIGHT CHILDREN: JOSEPH GRANVILLE-1863, JOHN WAITE-1864(MY PATERNAL GRAND FATHER), MARY LOUELLA- 1869, ANNA DORA-1872, LUCY PEARNIA-1875, SADIE MASON-1878, ROSALEE-1882, STILLBORN INFANT-1894.
IN 1879 MATHEW, MARTHA AND FAMILY MOVED TO LACLEDE COUNTY. MISSOURI AND REMAINED THERE FOR 10 YEARS. AT THE END OF THIS TIME, MATHEW, JOSEPH, AND JOHN BEGAN DROVING HORSES FROM MISSOURI TO TEXAS. THEN IN 1893 THE ENTIRE FAMILY MOVED TO TEXAS. FOLLOWING THE TEXAS AND PACIFIC RAILROAD FROM DALLAS TO ABILENE, TEXAS, AT THIS POINT THEY DECIDED THEY WOULD ALL SETTLE FOR GOOD IN ABILENE TEXAS.THE HUMPHREY FAMILY GREW AND PROSPERED IN ABILENE AND SURROUNDING TERRITORY.
When Mathew died in 1894(cause of death is unknown) he was interred in a site owned by his son, Joseph, in the Abilene City Cem. In 1912, when Martha, died Mathew was reinterred in the IOOF Cem. in a 6 plot grave site owned by A. M. Daniel(his son in law) In the plot are buried, Mathew, Martha to his right, Mary LOUEllA(his daughter)TO HIS LEFT, A. M. Daniel son in law, an infant with Mary, and a Mrs. Crisbee. One site is open. The one marker on the site belongs to Mathew. An inscription reads " Sleep on dear Father, At Rest, God called thee home, He thought it best."
