Western Frontiersman. William "Wild Bill" Hickman was a bodyguard to Joseph Smith, the founder of the LDS Church, and his successor, Brigham Young. He belonged to the early Utah Militia and participated in the Timpanogas War of 1850 and the Echo Canyon War of 1857. He served as a clerk to the justice of the peace in Taylorsville. He also held the positions of Bishop's Counselor and clerk in his ward and was elected a member of the Utah Legislature. He practiced polygamy and married ten wives, all of whom he supported by farming and through his law practice. In 1868, he had a falling out with the LDS Church, after which he wrote the book, Brigham's Destroying Angel, which was published in New York in 1872. When Wild Bill died in 1883, his family first buried him in the cemetery at Lander, Wyoming, but the locals protested at having an outlaw buried in their midst. The family then transferred Wild Bill's body to a remote area of Fremont County.
