Jacob was the 4th of 10 children of Michael Keppel and Dorothea Yerian of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was baptized Johann Jacob Keppel at Greensburg Lutheran Church on April 26, 1795, sponsors Daniel and Elizabeth Keppel, his father's brother and his mother's sister.
He married on January 19, 1826, to Margaret Deemer.
