English Actor. Son of Bert Coote who wrote the popular children's play "The Windmill Man". He was born in London and educated at Hurstpierpoint College in Sussex, England. Best remebered for his role as Colonel Hugh Pickering in the long-running original production of "My Fair Lady". After making his film debut in "Sally in Our Alley"(1931)and spending several years on the London stage, he settled in Hollywood, where in film after film he played stuffed shirt aristocrats, snooty military officers and clueless young twits who never got the girl. His acting was interrupted when he served as a squadron leader in the Canadian Air Force during World War II. He was cast as "Colonel Hugh Pickering" in a Broadway musical "My Fair Lady"(1957)", "Gunga Din"(1939),"The Ghost and Mrs.Muir"(1947),"Berlin Express"(1948),"Scaramouche"(1952),and "The Prisoner of Zenda"(1952). His last film role was as one of Vincent Price's victims in "Theatre of Blood"(1973). His final role was a nurse, Theodore Horstmann, in the 1981 NBC TV series "Nero Wolfe", starrind William Conrad. He was nominated for Broadway's 1957 Tony Award as Best Supporting Actor(Musical)for "My Fair Lady". The British actor died in his sleep at the New York Athletic Club at the age of 73.
