Austrian Actor. Vienna born Werner Pochath was a champion skating figure in his youth, prior to his acting debut that commenced in 1959 in the theatrical production of "Die Courage", having frequented the prestigious Max Reinhardt Seminar. After appearing in other productions held in Karlsruhe, Berlin, Basel, Stuttgart and Münich, he moved to Rome in 1968 to initiate his movie career, although he kept returning to the stage in the years that followed starring in a number of guest appearances. With his first appearance in a television production being Ludwig Cremers's "Der Besuch der alten Dame", the blond blue-eyes actor soon found himself interpreting crime villains, often embodying negative, psychologically labile, cold-blooded and psychopathic characters. Starring among others next to Curd Jürgens in Franz Antel's "Ab morgen sind wir reich und ehrlich", being based in Rome, most of his roles were ones engaged in Italian, Spanish and US productions, playing alongside several internationally renowned stars such as Tomas Milian in "Sonny and Jed"; James Coburn in "Sky Riders"; Tony Curtis in "Casanova & Co."; Bud Spencer in "Piedone d'Africa"; Richard Burton in "Breakthrough"; Franco Nero in "The Shark Hunter"; David Bowie and Marlene Dietrich in "Just a Gigolo"; and Richard Chamberlain in "Wallenberg: A Hero's Story". Also playing in B-movies and TV-series such as "Pater Brown" and "Derrick", as of 1990 he ran a film agency as well as a casting office. Playing his last role in an episode of the crime series "Peter Strohm" with Klaus Löwitsch in the lead role, during the filming his health worsened visibly due to AIDS from which he was then suffering. He died at fifty-three years of age in the arms of his friend, Hamburg ballet director, John Neumeier, due to cirrhosis caused by strong medication.
