US Congressman from New York. He grew up in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, and graduated from Yale College in 1824. He studied law at Connecticut's Litchfield Law School, and became an attorney in 1827. Leavenworth settled in Syracuse, where he practiced law and took part in several business ventures. He was active in the militia for many years and attained the rank of Brigadier General in 1836. He was Syracuse's Village President from 1839-1841 and 1846 to 1847. When Syracuse became a city he served as Mayor from 1849 to 1850. Leavenworth also served as a member of the New York Assembly in 1850. From 1854 to 1855 he was New York's Secretary of State, and he served as Syracuse Mayor again from 1859 to and 1860. In 1860 he was Chairman of the New York State Republican Convention. From 1861 to 1862 Leavenworth served on the federal commission that monitored compliance with the treaty with New Granada (present day Columbia and Panama) that granted the United States the right to travel across the Isthmus of Panama. In 1874 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Republican and served one term, 1875 to 1877. He did not run for reelection in 1876 and returned to hus businesses in Syracuse.
