Timothy John Campbell

US Congressman. He immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1845. After working as a printer while studying law, he became an attorney in 1869. Campbell was a member of the New York Assembly from 1868 to 1873, and again in 1875 and 1883. He was also Judge of the District Civil Court from 1875 to 1883 and a State Senator from 1884 to 1885. He was elected to Congress as a Democrat in an 1885 special election held to fill the vacancy caused when Samuel S. Cox resigned. He was reelected to a full term in 1886 and served from November 1885 to March 1889. Campbell ran unsuccessfully for reelection in 1888, but won again in 1890 and 1892, serving from 1891 to 1895. He lost his race for reelection in 1894, after which he resumed practicing law. (bio by: Bill McKern)
