|Birth: ||Apr. 11, 1796|
John was the 5th of 5 children of Frederick Yerian and his 1st wife, Anna Maria Dorn/Thorn. He was baptized Lutheran in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, on August 15, 1796, sponsors John and Barbara Dorn, believed to be his grandparents.
John enlisted from Ohio in the War of 1812. One researcher thought he must have died at that time, inspiring his father to name another son John in 1813. Another researcher thought he was the John "Garrigan" listed in the 1820 census of Muskingum County, Ohio.
The "Roster of Ohio Soldiers of the War of 1812" lists: 1st Regmt. Ohio Militia, Capt. Wm. Stephenson's Co. (probably from Belmont County, Ohio), served September 13, 1813, -- March 20, 1814. Pvt. John Yerian is listed in the platoon commanded by Lt. Dan. Berry.
