Birth: Sep. 15, 1831
Cornwall, England
Death: Mar. 11, 1891
Dane County
Wisconsin, USA

John Edwards was born in
England Sept. 15, 1831, being
in the sixtieth year of his age at
the time of his death. He came
to Wood county in the year 1859,
when but twenty-eight years of
age, and was given charge of his
father's interests in the firm of
J. Edwards & Co., who operated a
saw-mill about half a mile above
the present site of the mill now
located at Port Edwards. His
father died in the year 1864, and
soon thereafter the property came
into the hands of the four Ed-
wards brothers - John, George,
William and Richard. In the
year 1873, Thos. B. Scott and John
Edwards jointly purchased the
interest of the other three broth-
ers, and became the sole owners
of this valuable property. Thus it
remained until the 15th day of last
October, when The John Edwards
Manufacturing company was in-
corporated, with John Edwards, L.
M. Alexander, Walter A., and T.
B. Scott as subscribers to the
capital stock.
Mr. Edwards was married to
Miss Frances J. Morrill on the
16th day of January, 1861. One
child, a daughter, has blessed
this union...
The funeral services will be
held Sunday afternoon, under the
direction of the Fort Winnebago
Commandry No. 4. Short ser-
vices will be held at his residence
in Port Edwards at one o'clock,
which will be followed by servi-
ces at the Grand Rapids opera
house, after which the remains
will be committed to their kind-
red dust in Forest Hill Cemetery.
The Centralia Enterprise And Tribune; Saturday, March 14, 1891

Operated a sawmill in Frenchtown, later named Port Edwards. This business—built in 1840 and jointly owned by this man's father, John Edwards Sr., and the senior Edwards' partner, Henry Clinton—eventually evolved into a paper mill. Founded two local railroads, served as Wood County Board chairman, was appointed by President Lincoln to serve as postmaster, was district school treasurer, personally financed the first school building in Port Edwards, and became a state assemblyman in 1890. Died in office in Madison.

Port Edwards Municipal Cemetery was established in 1957. Grandson John Alexander moved Edwards and other family members to this cemetery in 1961.
