ROBERT DUNN IS KILLED BY TRAIN

Casper Man Meets Death When Riding Freight

Robert Dunn of Casper, aged 21 years, fell to his death Monday night as he was riding a Northwestern freight. The accident occurred about midnight Monday near Big Muddy Station.

H. McFarlane, electrician for the railroad, discovered the mangled remains Tuesday morning about 9 o'clock. He was riding a gasoline car, following the eastbound passenger. He notified Coroner C. H. Hofmann and Sheriff W. R. Silver, who brought the body to Douglas.

The body was mangled almost beyond recognition. The head was severed from the body, the torso was separated and other parts of the body were scattered along the railroad. A Casper friend of the dead man identified the body as that of Dunn and remnants of clothing picked up helped to confirm the identification.

Coroner Hofmann held an inquest Wednesday, the jury being composed of George Ullman, Eli Peterson and Clarence Marsh. Only two witnesses were examined, McFarlane and Conductor Turner of the freight train. Turner testified that when notified of the accident when his train was nearing Chadron he examined his train and found that the eighth car from the engine was the one that had killed the man. It was a tank car and Dunn had evidently fallen inside from the small platform that runs along the car. There were 70 cars in the train and evidently the rest of the train had passed over the body. The eastbound passenger train passed over the spot the next morning without the crew noticing the body.

Dunn was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph W. Dunn of Casper. Unable to find work in Casper, he was leaving home to try elsewhere when the fatal accident occurred.

The body was taken to Casper for burial, funeral services being held there Wednesday afternoon.

---Douglas Budget, Douglas, WY, May 17, 1934

Mortuary records show his birth as Feb. 2, 1913 in Iowa; his father as Joseph Dunn, born in Montana or Missouri; and mother as Mary Joe Jackson, born in Missouri.
