US Congressman. The older brother of Washington Irving, he followed his father in the fur business, trading with the Indian tribes of upstate New York and living in Johnstown, Caughnawaga and other frontier trading posts. In 1793 he returned to New York City, where he expanded his business to include goods other than furs, and took as partners his brother Peter Irving and brother-in-law James Kirke Paulding, who later served as Secretary of the Navy. William Irving also contributed several essays and poems to "Salmagundi," which was published by Washington Irving as a magazine and later issued as a book. In 1813 he was elected Democratic-Republican to represent New York's 2nd Congressional in the United States House of Representatives in a special election held to fill the vacancy caused by Egbert Benson's resignation. He was subsequently elected to two full terms and served from January, 1814 to March, 1819. William Irving then returned to his trading business, which later included Washington Irving as a partner, and which he was still operating at the time of his death. (bio by: Bill McKern)
