Daughter of Martin Tillotson and Minerva Mallory, Amanda descends from Richard Warren through the Tillotsons. Richard Warren was a passenger on the Mayflower. Amanda's first husband was Orren J. Taylor of York, Steuben Co. Indiana. after his death in 1871 she married Edward Olmstead in 1872. Amanda was brought to Grand Rapids from Kingsley by her granddaughter Minnie Belle Gary. Minnie Belle then placed her in the Poor Farm in Paris Township now Kentwood, Michigan. This Poor Farm was located on 32nd St. Where currently the Luther Village Retirement Home is now located. He death was due to cancer of the mouth. According to her great granddaughter Mary E. Spaulding who visited her with her family just prior to Amanda's death, the cancer had eaten away most the skin around here mouth and jaw area. Amanda smoked a pipe, this may have been what caused this cancer to form. According to death records she is reported as being buried in Oakhill Cemetery in Grand Rapids. No burial records exist for her at Oakhill, according to Mary, Grandma Olmstead was buried behind the Poor Farm in a paupers grave. This cemetery is known as the Maplewood-poor farm cemetery. Not many of the graves are marked in this cemetery and no official records exist. All of the burials were people who lived in th poor farm and could not afford a proper burial. In the 1880 census of Nebraska, Edward and Amanda live in Linwood, Butler Co. with two children, Ella age 12 and Delbert age 5. In the 1885 census of Nebraska, Edmond (sic) age 36 and Armanda (sic) age 36 with children Delbert age 10 and Ernest age 13? live in Ft. Calhoun Township, Washington Co. Nebraska. Amanda's daughter, Ella, lives nearby, wife of James Gary. In the 1900 census, Edward and Amanda Olmstead live in Paradise Township, Grand Traverse Co. Michigan with children Ernest born Apr. 1886 in Ne. and Albert born June 1887 in Ks. Amanda is listed as having 8 children 4 living.
