Funeral services will be Wed., Dec. 20, for William R. "Bill" Arneson, 95, Madison, who died on Dec. 15, 2006, at Heritage Senior Living in Madison. The Rev. Bruce Iverson will officiate in Trinity Lutheran Church, and burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Mark and Joe Whealy, Mark and Paul Thompson, Michael Pierson and Terry Tennant.

Arneson was born on April 21, 1911, at Bryant to G.A.S. and Bertha (Braaten) Arneson. He graduated from Bryant High School in 1928 and attended Augustana College. He graduated from Eastern State Teachers College and married Neva G. Buehler on Oct. 29, 1936. He received his law degree from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minn., in 1940 and opened a law practice in Madison. He practiced law in Madison for more than 50 years. He was elected Lake County States Attorney from 1944-45 and was then appointed to the state Board of Corrections and Charities. He was elected state senator for Lake/Moody counties from 1961-64.

He was a member and one-time chairman of the Madison Community Hospital Board from 1951-85, during which time the new hospital was constructed in 1962. He incorporated and was on the original board of directors of Prairie Historical Society. He was on the original committee of the Bethel Lutheran Home and incorporated it; was a member of the governing board of the State Bar of South Dakota from 1971-73 and of the Governor's Court Reform Commission. He belonged to the American Bar Association, Christian Legal Society, Lake County and South Dakota historical societies, Madison Golf & Country Club, Elks Lodge #1442, Kiwanis Club (past president) and Sons of Norway.

He was active throughout the years in Trinity Lutheran Church, Dakota State University, DSU Foundation and Alumni Association, Republican Party, Chamber of Commerce, Karl E. Mundt Foundation Board, and served on the S.D. Citizens for Higher Education Committee.

Survivors include two daughters, Gayle (Gary) Pierson of LaGrange, Ill.; and Mary (Gene) Whealy of Norfolk, Neb.; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Neva in 2003; two brothers; and three sisters.
