| Birth: | Dec. 23, 1785 Savannah Chatham County Georgia, USA | | Death: | Jul. 9, 1856 Monticello Jasper County Georgia, USA |  US Congressman and Senator. From 1810 to 1813, he was a member of Georgia State House of Representatives. In 1813, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirteenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William W. Bibb. Reelected to the Fourteenth Congress, he served until resigning in 1816. In 1821, he was elected to the Seventeenth, Eighteenth, and Nineteenth Congresses. He was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John Forsyth in 1835 and served until he retired in 1843.
