| Birth: | Oct. 16, 1923 | | Death: | May 13, 1957 | Ethiopian Royalty. Born Araya Yohannes. He was the son of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I and his wife, Empress Menen Asfaw. A native of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, he became known as the Duke of Harrar upon his parent's coronation. He later married Sara Gizaw, and she was the given title of Princess and Duchess of Harrar. Together the two had five children including Prince Taffari, Prince Mikael, Prince Beide Mariam, Prince Makkonen, Prince Wossen Seged, and Prince Dawit. Prince Makkonen also had another child, a daughter named Woizero Meheret Makonnen, from another relationship. It is believed that the Emperor favored Makkonen over all of his other children and upon his death would name the prince as his heir, but this was not to be. On May 13, 1957, the prince was killed in a car accident in Debre Zeit, Ethiopia. He was returned to Addis Ababa and buried in the royal crypt at the Holy Trinity Cathedral. (bio by: K)
