William Bursey
Birth: Aug. 29, 1894
Old Perlican
Avalon Peninsula Census Division
Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Death: Jun. 23, 1967
Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

William Bursey was born in Old Perlican, Newfoundland (then an English colony) to fisherman and lighthouse keeper Stephen(b.1864-d.?) & Lydia(nee Stanford b.1862-d.1894) Bursey. After the death of his mother in 1894 from tuberculosis, William was primarily raised by his father's mother, Rachel Bursey, the wife of fisherman Isaac Bursey (b.1835-d.?).

William was the lighthousekeeper on Old Perlican Island. In 1931, the light was changed from kerosene to gas thus eliminating the need for the light keeper to live on the island full-time.

William married Bertha Martin of Harbour Grace(b.1898-d.1927) in 1919 and had 3 children, Monica Grace, Lucy Velma & Graham (who was killed while serving in the Royal Navy during WWII, at age 21). 2 years after the death of his first wife, William married Ethel Tryphena "Triffie" Hiscock of Victoria on March 20, 1930; William and Triffie raised 4 children of their own, Clyde, Helen (b.1933-d.1948), Adelaide & Graham.

William served in both World Wars I & II in the Royal Naval Reserve, earning him the nick-name locally of "War-Will".

William died from cancer on the 23 of June 1967, and is buried next to his second wife, Triffie, and his half-brother, Joshua (b.1905-d.1969).
