James Austin DAVIS was born circa 1850 in Monroe Co., IN, the son of Austin and Fanny (REYNOLDS) DAVIS. He married on July 2, 1873 in Monroe Co., IN to Mary Ellen SWAFFORD, daughter of Peter Kirkpatrick and Mary Ann (CROCKETT) SWAFFORD. James died June 12, 1909 in Logansport, Cass Co., IN.
James and Mary had two daughters : Ida born July 2, 1874 and Dealie born July 1877.
In the 1880 census of Owen Co., IN, James appears as Austin DAVIS, married, aged 30, insane.
Mary remarried on November 15, 1884 in Monroe Co., IN to Robert Farrell GILLILAND. Robert raised Ida & Dealie and they assumed the GILLILAND surname.
