Elizabeth Mills Allen is the daughter of Jonathan Mills and Susanna Davis Mills. She moved to Stockbridge, Vermont with her parents when three years old, where she married John Allen in 1821. In 1835 she traveled by wagon and steamboat from Vermont to Chicago with three children, her husband had previously come West and located in St. Joseph, Mich. In 1835 he came to Chicago, where he met his family after their weary journey of one month on the road. They made their home in Elk Grove. They raised four children; John Allen, Jesse Mills Allen, Persis (Mrs. Joel H. Cooper),and Evelyn (Mrs. James Frake).
