Hunt Transport Services, he was born in Cleburne County, Arkansas. He grew up during the Great Depression of the 1930s and left school after seventh grade to support his family. He first worked in an uncle's sawmill and, after a stint in the United States Army, became a lumber salesman, auctioneer, and truck driver. In 1961 he founded a rice hull business, which failed. Returning to trucking in 1969, he founded what became the vast "J. B. Hunt" trucking empire. Although he retired from the position of president in 1982, he remained chairman until 1995, when he became senior chairman, and retired completely from the company at the end of 2004 to focus on Arkansas real estate development.
