17th Governor-General of Australia. He served from 30 April 1969 to 11 July 1974. Prior to serving as governor-general, he studied at Perth Modern School from 1918 to 1922. He then attended the University of Western Australia where he graduated with a Masters Degree. He then became a writer and in 1939 established the Freshwater Bay Press and released his first book. In 1941 he was recruited to the staff of the Department of External Affairs and after the war he returned to the University of Western Australia as a Reader in History. He then became a Member of the Australian Parliament serving from 1949 to 1969. From 1951 to 1963 he was Minister for Territories. He then served as Minister for Defense for a year and then Minister for External Affairs from 1964 to 1969 when he was made governor-general. He is best remembered as a distinguished historian, poet, cultural publicist and essayist, and an important and early spokesman in favor of Aboriginal rights. He retired to Perth, where he remained active in cultural and political affairs until his death.
