James Henry was the son of James Day and Ellen McDaniel.
He was the brother of William Ballard, George Webster, Lewis Lincoln, Franklin Nicholas, David Walter, Nellie, Laura and Jessie Rosannah.
His family emigrated first to Grant County, Wisconsin from Burke's Garden, Tazewell, Virginia in the mid 1840s. They then settled in St. Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota, where James Henry was born. The family moved to Belleplain, where they had a farm.
Following the death of his father in 1868, James Henry and his family migrated West to Walla Walla, Washington, where James Henry's uncles, Jesse Newberry Day, Henry B. Day and Dr. John Harvey Day, were living.
His mother re-married Joseph Monroe Deardorff in Grant County, Oregon in 1869. There, James Henry worked on the family farm. It is unclear when he married our great-grandmother, Mary Edna Sorenson, but it is believed it was 1883.
James Henry and Mary had three daughters: Evelyn Eleanor, born 1888, Elsie Angeline, later Elise Marie, our grandmother, in 1895, and Ada "Adree" Marion in 1899. Following his step-father's death, the family, along with Ellen, moved first to Watsonville, California and later to Los Angeles.
James Henry worked as a laborer in farming and other fields. It appears that he had a very good relationship with his mother, as she spoke highly of him and he made every effort to take care of her in her old age.
Our great-grandfather passed away from heart failure at the age of 51. The cemetery where he was buried is now Founders Park in Whittier.
