Bert Roland was shown as residing in Swain Co., NC, when he enlisted in the US Army at Camp Croft, SC., on Sept. 24, 1942 ...His marital status was 'married' (to Naoma Cline Roland of Swain Co., NC) and his education was grammar schooling. His serial number was 34432480. His pre-war occupation code was shown as 'lumbering related'. He was assigned to the 455th AAA Bn., after the unit was formed in Sept. 1942..The 455th AAA trained at Camp Stewart and Ft. Benning, Ga., then went overseas to Norfolk, England (in Sept. 1943). Bert was in Battery 'C', gun crew #6, as an 'elevation tracker' on a 40mm Bofors antiaircraft gun. His rank was Pvt...Bert's unit was located at a B-24 bomber repair airbase at Watton, Norfolk, England.

In July 1944, the 455th AAA went to France for 'Operation Cobra', as part of Patton's 3rd Army, Walker's XX Corps. They later went into Germany and Austria and returned home in October 1945. The unit shotdown/damaged over 130 German aircraft and became the second highest-scoring antiaircraft unit in Patton's 3rd Army.

Bert's wife Naoma died on Dec. 1, 1946. At some point after that, Bert moved to Gaston Co., NC. He lived in the textile community of Smyre, and was married to Pauline Dixon Roland. He resided in Gaston Co., NC, when he passed away in 2006, at age 86.
