The Sandusky Clarion 12 Nov 1825

Died at Marion, on Monday the 24th Oct. Thomas Backus, Esq. prosecuting attorney for Marion county, aged 40 years. About a month after the deceased removed from Columbus, in good health, to the place where his remains now lie mingling with their kindred dust, he paid the great debt of nature. Mr. Backus was a gentleman of spotless integrity, and possessed an honest and benevolent heart - a good mind enriched by extensive reading. The number, respectability and intelligence of his friends, and the warmth and sincerity of their attachment, were proofs of his worth and their estimate of it. He has left an amiable and intelligent wife and five interesting children to mourn the loss of an affectionate and indulgent husband and parent.
