US Supreme Court Associate Justice, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. Born in Ravenna, Ohio, he graduated from the University of Michigan in 1870 and was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1872. A successful lawyer, he befriended the future president William McKinley and was appointed district judge for the Northern District of Ohio in 1886. In 1898, President William McKinley appointed Day Secretary of State and he worked tirelessly to secure the neutrality of Europe during the Spanish-American War. As the US representative to the peace conference in Paris, Day successfully negotiated with Spain the ceding of Cuba, Guam, the Philippines and Puerto Rice to the United States for $20 million. After resigning as Secretary of State he returned to the legal profession until 1903, when President Roosevelt nominated him associate justice of the US Supreme Court. He had a distinguished career in the Supreme Court, serving until he resigned due to failing health in 1922. He died at age 74 in Mackinac Island, Michigan. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
