Grace Lavina Bender, daughter of Isaiah Van Winkle and Marinda Blackman Van Winkle was born in Wapello Co., Iowa Sept 20, 1872. When a young girl she joined the Methodist church. At 12 years of age she with her parents moved to near Maloy, Iowa.
She was united in marriage in 1893 to Perry Bender and moved to her present farm home where she spent the remainder of her life, except for one year which was spent in her daughter Maye's home.
To this union two daughters were born, Reva Morey who preceded her in death in 1951 and Maye Matthews.
Surviving are: Maye and son-in-law Robert Matthews; five grandchildren: Kenneth Matthews, Clearfield, Carroll Matthews, Diagonal; Roberta Maye Cook, Lenox; Phyliss Goodale, Clearfield; and Adra Bailey, Diagonal; two sisters one brother, Mrs Cora Smith, San Diego, Calif; Mrs Bertha Ray, Brush, Colo.; Fay Van Winkle, Clearfield; 11 great grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
The welfare of her family and loved ones was first in her thoughts.
Her great granddaughters were flower bearers: Virginia Lee Cook, James Matthews, Suzanne Cook and Leila Sue Goodale. Pall bearers were Ralph Kiplinger, Harry Bentley, Olyn Davis, Aster Nelson, Howard Stephens and Don Stephens.
