James Eldridge was born in Massachusetts. He was a resident of Chicago when he was mustered in as a private in the 2nd Illinois Light Artillery, Battery G. on Dec. 26, 1863. At the time of his enlistment he was recorded as being 18 years old, 5'6", with dark hair, black eyes and a dark complexion. His occupation at the time was a farmer. He was mustered out on Sept. 4, 1865 at Springfield, Illinois.
