William Duer

US Congressman. He was the grandson of William Duer (1747-1799), who served in the Continental Congress. The younger Duer graduated from Columbia College in 1824, and was admitted to the bar in the same year. He practiced law in New York City and ran unsuccessfully for the State assembly in 1832. He was a New York Assemblyman in 1840 and 1841, and ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1842. In 1844 he was a Delegate to the Whig National Convention, and he served as Oswego County District Attorney from 1845 to 1847. In 1846 Duer was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Whig and served two terms, 1847 to 1851. He was then appointed US Consul in Valparaiso, Chile, serving from 1851 to 1853. In 1854 he began residence in San Francisco, where he practiced law and served as County Clerk from 1858 to 1859. In 1859 Duer retired to Staten Island.
