Rif Dimashq, Syria
Death: May 23, 2006
Los Angeles
Los Angeles County

Music promoter. Copeland played a key role in launching the New Wave movement in the United States. He was born in Damascus, the son of CIA agent Miles Copeland, Jr. His older brother Miles III founded IRS Records, and younger brother Stewart was the drummer for The Police. After serving in the Army during Vietnam, he began his music industry career as the tour manager for Wishbone Ash and then as a booking agent in London. Copeland founded New York's Frontier Booking International in 1979 and represented most of the best known New Wave acts of the 1980s, including Squeeze, the B-52's, The Cure, The Police, Simple Minds, and The English Beat. In the mid 1980s and 1990s FBI's talent pool grew beyond New Wave to include acts as diverse as The Go-Gos, Nine Inch Nails and REM, and eventually included representation of actors. FBI's music division merged with InterTalent Agency in 1992 and Copeland moved to Los Angeles. In 1995 he published his autobiography, Wild Thing. In 1997 he opened the Backstage Café in Beverly Hills, where well known musicians including Sting frequently showed up to perform impromptu concerts, and which he operated until his death from melanoma. (bio by: Bill McKern)
